What is the difference between L-Carnitine and Acetyl L-Carnitine?

The effects of L-carnitine are more physical than mental, in the sense that L-carnitine may provide physical energy whereas acetyl-l-carnitine provides more mental energy. L-Carnitine form is preferred by myocardial (heart muscle) cells, with brain cells showing a preference for Acetyl L-Carnitine.

One study shows that patients who took 2 grams of L-carnitine a day for four weeks cut the number of complications from a heart attack (angina, heart rhythm disturbances and heart failure) in half.

L-carnitine also gives the body a boost in energy levels. The release of fat makes LC important in weight loss or exercise regimens because it helps convert body fat into fuel. It also raises levels of certain enzymes needed to metabolize sugars, starches and other carbohydrates. A supplement of L-carnitine promotes stamina when used with an exercise program, while also reducing production of lactic acid, which causes that burning feeling in the muscles.

L-carnitine is not able to cross the blood-brain barrier as well as its activated form Acetyl-L-Carnitine. Acetyl-l-carnitine has a significantly more noticeable effect on the mind than carnitine. Acetyl-l-carnitine usually enhances mental clarity and focus, along with slight mood elevation.

improved mental function that results from acetyl-L-carnitine supplementation in patients with cognitive disorders, including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, and other disorders of the nervous system. Additional studies supporting a neuroprotective role for acetyl-L-carnitine are those demonstrating an improvement in symptoms of peripheral nerve damage common to diabetic patients.

ALC, but not LC, has been demonstrated to protect the nervous system, partly because it more readily is transported into the nervous system. ALC, but not LC, protects the mitochondria. A recent finding demonstrated that a deficiency in ALC affects the structure and energy-producing capacity of the mitochondria.

ALC has been demonstrated to revitalize mitochondria by restoring levels of a key mitochondrial component, a phospholipid known as cardiolipin, which is susceptible to age-associated reduction in levels. Cardiolipin can be envisioned as the glue that secures and organizes, or better yet, orchestrates, the energy-producing machinery of the mitochondria.

In addition to enhancing cognitive abilities (such as increased alertness, longer attention span, and improved learning and memory), acetyl-L-carnitine has also been shown to effectively suppress protein glycation, which can lead to the formation of cataracts.

Which one is better for weight loss L-Carnitine OR Acetyl L-Carnitine?

L carnitine is better for weight loss, but a combination of both is recommended.

Can I take L-Carnitine and Carnitine together?

Yes, you may take both the supplement together.

What is Carnitine and where does it come from?

Carnitine is classified as an amino acid, although it is not an amino acid in the classic sense. Amino acids are generally used by the body for protein synthesis and/or as a neurotransmitter. Carnitine, which is closely related to B vitamins, is primarily used to facilitate the transport of long-chain fatty acids into the mitochondria of cells for energy production. This process provides muscular energy by burning fat, and also prevents fatty build-up around vital organs. Muscle cells that use the most energy, particularly the heart, can benefit by having adequate carnitine levels.
