Q.What is the borage oil?
A.The borage, or starflower, plant produces seeds that are a rich source of an essential fatty acid called gamma-linoleic acid, or GLA. The body can convert GLA to an anti-inflammatory compound called prostaglandin E1, or PGE1. Borage oil has a reputation for alleviating symptoms of autoimmune disorders, skin disorders, premenstrual syndrome and cramps, diabetic neuropathy and other inflammatory conditions. The oil is usually taken internally in a capsule, but can also be applied topically. Of the three oils that are good sources of GLA -- borage, evening primrose and black currant seed -- borage has the highest concentration.Omega-6 fatty acids are essential for health, but because the body cannot produce them, they must be obtained through diet or supplements. Some omega-6 fatty acids promote inflammation, but gamma-linoleic acid does not. In fact, GLA may actually decrease inflammation in the body. Borage seed oil is a good source of GLA, and may be useful for treating rheumatoid arthritis. The gamma linoleic acid in borage oil transforms into a hormone-like substance that can block skin inflammations.

Q.What are the benefits of borage oil?
A.For Arthritic Conditions
All of the autoimmune disorders that borage oil is reputed to help, studies related to rheumatoid arthritis show the most promise so far. Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic, painful inflammation of the joints often requiring the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, also known as NSAIDS that could have side effects. GLA in oils such as borage could provide symptom relief and possibly reduce the need for painkillers.
For Skin Health
Atypical dermatitis, psoriasis and eczema can be stubborn disorders that are often unresponsive to prescription medications; therefore, natural remedies might be appealing. Borage oil, taken internally and used topically, has been used for soothing these and other inflammatory skin conditions. The research is a little more conclusive at the moment for milder, common skin issues.
Reduction of Eczema
Borage oil can relieve the symptoms of eczema or atopic dermatitis. It was found that treatment with borage oil reduces skin itching, inflammation and scaliness Regular use of borage oil has been known to help reduce symptoms, not only of eczema but also acne, psoriasis, itchy scalp and the chronic inflammatory skin condition of rosacea. The symptoms of rosacea are redness or swelling of the nose, chin, cheeks, forehead or eyelids.
Restoring Dry and Damaged Skin
Scaly, dry skin showed that borage oil was able to restore the softness and moisture of dry skin.Borage oil restore the skin smoothness and also the humidity of the skin and transepidermal water loss (TEWL). TEWL is the quantity of water that passes through the epidermal layer of the skin into the surrounding atmosphere through evaporation.
Relief of Infantile Seborrheic Dermatitis
The external application of borage oil was used by children suffering from infantile seborrheic dermatitis.Children condition have dry scales and crusts on their eyelids, scalp, face, armpits and groins. All 48 children in the study after only 10 to 12 days of the treatment with borage oil were free from lesions, even in other areas of their bodies where the oil was not applied. The condition never returned, even after the discontinuation of borage oil.

Q.What are the side effects?
A.Gastrointestinal side effects are possible when taking borage seed oil. These effects can include gas, belching, bloating, indigestion, nausea and diarrhea. Some people also experience headaches when consuming this substance.

Q.Is it safe during pregnant or nursing women?
A.Pregnant women should not take borage seed oil because it might have harmful effects on the fetus. GLA supplements may cause premature labor.

Q.Is borage oil have any interaction with medication?
A.Medications that increase the breakdown of other medications by the liver (Cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) inducers) and slow blood clotting (Anticoagulant / Antiplatelet drugs) and Medications used during surgery (Anaesthesia) interacts with borage.
