Q.What is chasteberry?
A.The chasteberry (botanically known as Vitex agnus-castus) was thought to suppress the libido of both males and females. Chaste tree berry, or Vitex, comes from a small tree native to the Mediterranean and Central Asia. The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine explains that women have used chaste tree berry for thousands of years to treat menstrual problems, infertility and other gynecological issues. Indigenous to the Mediterranean region, the chaste tree–actually a small shrub that bears violet flowers and reddish black berries–is now found in subtropical climates around the globe. In the fall, its ripe berries are dried and used medicinally. Similar to peppercorns in shape, chasteberries also have a peppery taste. Other common names for this herb include vitex, monk’s pepper, and chaste tree berry.

Q.How it helps for perimenopause?
A.Some of the discomforts of perimenopause are probably caused by an excessive amount of the milk-producing hormone, prolactin, released by the pituitary gland at the base of brain. The best way to understand how chasteberry works is to think of it as a stabilizer of body’s delicate balance of hormones, including prolactin. Chasteberry suppresses the excessive prolactin, readjusting the level of your two sex hormones, estrogen and progesterone. If perimenopause is making things uncomfortable–drenching with sweat, making feel moody, causing vaginal dryness so this herb will usually make feel better. Vitex agnus-castus seems to affect many hormones that regulate women's reproductive cycles

Q.What are active constituents present in chaste tree?
A.Chaste tree contains several different phytochemicals that act as hormones, including progesterone, testosterone and androstenedione. Chaste tree also contains naturally occurring steroid precursors and it acts as an estrogen like compound in body. Chaste tree is also rich in flavonoids, which can act as antioxidants in body, decreasing the cellular damage caused by the byproducts of metabolism.

Q.What are side effects of chasteberry?
A.Chasteberry does not cause any side effect but in women develop an itchy skin rash or complain of stomach discomfort.Chasteberry may increase menstrual flow.

Q.Is it safe for nursing women?
A.No, avoid taking chasteberry during nursing period.
